Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “bayağı sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine destelanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız lafıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok nüshada polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Taban ayrım peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, sair amino asite daima, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle destelanır. Polipeptid kuruluşsına beklan amino asitlerin her biri kuruluşya peptid destelarıyla destelanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir kez çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine beklan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin sair ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
